Going Global with Genres

Middle Division Reading Incentive Program

Grades 5-8

The goal of this program is to promote extracurricular reading for middle division students and introduce students to different literary genres.

The students will be given a tracking booklet/passport to mark his/her progress through out the year. For each genre a student will write down the title and author of each book. At the completion of reading all seven genres, parents/guardians will sign the booklet to verify their child has read the books. Books should be at or above reading level. Students are also asked to complete a plot diagram for each book read.

At the end of April, after completion of the passport, the student will have his/her name placed in a bowl for a drawing of one $10 gift certificate and a pizza party for their class.

The genre assignments are:

Book of your choice

Historical Fiction

Mystery

Science Fiction/Fantasy

Biography/Autobiography

Nonfiction (3 books of 30 pages or more)

Poetry Collection

Books may come from home, the public library or the school library. Students are responsible for keeping up with the passport.  Only one replacement booklet will be issued.

Class read or Battle of the Books books may not be included in the program.

Participation is included in the student’s participation grade for literature.
